Withyfield Cottage

Located on a working dairy farm on the edge of the South Downs National Park, this unique, new, roundwood timber, straw bale and cedar shingle holiday cottage is available for hire from May. Inspired and built by Ben Law and his team (as seen on Channel 4’s Grand Designs) the cottage is comfortably furnished and well equipped. (Sleeps 6)

The build has been undertaken by craftsmen. All the wood has been grown in West Sussex and a lot of it has come from the nearby Cowdray Estate. The exterior cladding and the boards on the veranda are made of oak from our farm. The clay plaster render used to seal the gaps on the outside is made of Weald clay taken from the foundations. Our straw insulation comes from a neighbour’s farm. The cedar shingles are made from local wood.

Explore footpaths from the door, picnic or fish by the river, watch the wildlife or enjoy a camp fire.

Further afield, walk or cycle in the South Downs National Park or visit the coast.

Brighton, Steyning and Arundel are all within 30 miles.

February Already!

The cottage is progressing well. Lime plaster has been sprayed on the internal walls. Electrics and plumbing are going in. Dylan has been milling up some of our oak trees for the external cladding. The rest of the team has started cladding the south wall. The effect is wonderful, you really get a feel for how it is going to look when finished.

Straw Bales and Wool

Our holiday cottage is still on schedule. Eight inches of sheeps wool has been added to the roof, cosy. The straw bale walls are under construction. Most of the wiring and water pipes are in place. We are now taking bookings from May!
